Recommended Background: Students must be from a non-English speaking background. This includes immigrants (recently arrived or long-term residents) or students born in Australia.

Course Outline:
This subject is designed for students for whom English is an additional language or dialect. Students develop and use a range of language strategies to convey ideas and opinions that are appropriate for a variety of purposes and contexts. They exchange opinions and convey information and experiences in written and spoken forms. Student learning is supported through explicit modelling and construction of texts.

Students develop their confidence and competence as users of English, developing skills as critical viewers, listeners, speakers, readers, and writers.

Students who complete 20 credits of this subject with a C grade or better will meet the literacy requirement of the SACE.

Topics Covered:

In Stage 1 English as a Second Language students develop their ability to use English that is accurate and appropriate in a variety of contexts. They read, view and listen to short texts and discuss issues of interest. Students develop their skills in delivering effective oral presentations without undue reliance on memorised or written texts.

They undertake research and interact with other people in the community.
